About the Brewer Model 1927 Watch by Sphinx
The 1927 watch receives its model name as an ode to Captain Robert W. A. Brewer, inventor of the Pitcairn-Brewer Model F engine. Aviation was all the rage in the rage in the 1930s and many companies introduced aviation-themed watches to capitalize on the craze. This watch takes the premise to a modern standard with superior items such as the high-quality Seiko 24 jewel automatic movement along with the brushed stainless-steel case with 20ATM water resistance. The traditional look winged Brewer USA logo sits on dial with lumed numbers. The watch displays day/date functions which were nearly non-existent during that time. To complete the design, the lumed hands follow the traditional appearance of the era.
History behind Captain Brewer and the Pitcairn-Brewer engine. Developed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during 1927 and 1928 the engine was designed by Captain Brewer and sponsored by Harold F. Pitcairn. The objective behind this develop was to create a more reliable and lighter engine. Specifically, the objective was a replacement for the Curtiss OX-5 that could power Pitcairn Aircraft, Inc. and other aircraft as well. The Pitcairn-Brewer engine was tested by the U.S. Navy Aeronautical Engine Laboratory and was flight tested on a Pitcairn PA-4 Fleetwing II.
While the engine was successful technically, Pitcairn could not find a manufacturer willing to produce it. The Wright Whirlwind J-5 engine was being marketed at the same time, and the Pitcairn-Brewer engine could not compete with it. This is the last remaining engine of three built.
